Romier S
Yes, the good old DC is still seeing releases, and thankfully us shmup fans are always on the receiving end of the good news.:tu Under Defeat is apparently scheduled for release on the system now according to Gamefront.de. You can take a look at some screenshots from the arcade release and anticipate yet another shooter coming to the good old DC:

Ksolo12
I gotta pull the Dreamcast out of the box and play it for old time sake. I loved that system and it was too far ahead of its time.
Ryan FB
If you think it's odd that the Dreamcast is still getting releases, check out Beggar Prince, coming to the Genesis in 2006.
secretvampire
If you think it's odd that the Dreamcast is still getting releases, check out Beggar Prince, coming to the Genesis in 2006. I saw that! Kinda pricey for a Genesis game, but interesting. I know companies still release stuff for odd platforms including Jaguar, Sega CD, etc. Some of it is pointless though (IMO), such as a port of Total Carnage for the Jaguar. Yes, neat that you did it, but I'm not paying $100-200 for it, WTF?
secretvampire
For the three of us that care, my order shipped last week so I'll hopefully have some impressions up once it gets here. Yea Dreamcast!
Romier S
Oh nice. I'll have to check NCSX and see if they got thier orders in. New Dreamcast goodness.:rock EDIT: ..and they did. My order has shipped also. WOOHOO!
secretvampire
Yep, I got mine from Play-Asia, but there are some showing up on Ebay as well with fair prices, even a couple within the USA which would save on shipping a bit.
Hank Scorpio
Wow. This is incredibly tempting...
secretvampire
I got it today and my first impressions are...I like it quite a bit. The visuals are very impressive for the Dreamcast, even having spent the past week obsessively playing Oblivion on the 360. Sharp, detailed, and clean. It's an arcade conversion, so obviously the playfield is a vertical strip in the middle of the screen. It has the obligatory turn-the-TV-on-its-side mode, but I think I'm going to pass on that with my 500 pound RPTV. The difficulty seems just about right to me, and the controls feel great (once I figured them out). Basically, you rotate the ship with the d-pad when you are NOT shooting and once you begin shooting, lock into a direction. You have a number of screen clearing bombs and of course can pick up more. There are about 4 different special weapons you can pick up, only one at a time. When you stop firing, a meter recharges and when it is full, when you fire a little pod comes out and executes the attack (rockets, vulcan cannon, etc.) It basically rewards you for not firing constantly. Once it is used up, stop firing again for a couple of seconds to recharge. The sound is good, music is nothing to write home about. Kind of annoying since for some reason I got the limiited edition which includes the soundtrack. Which brings me to the weakest point (and it's a total nitpicker): the packaging. It's in a standard DVD case which just seems wrong for a Dreamcast game. I was expecting the LE to at least be in a decent box, but nope, it's just a DVD case with two DVD trays inside. Oh well. It's still a great title and I don't regret picking it up AT ALL. I look forward to spending some more time with it.
JoeyN
I have a DC sitting down stairs which i havent touched yet. Very tempting *edit* so it plays on Japanese systems only I see
secretvampire
*edit* so it plays on Japanese systems only I see Makes no difference, just use one of the free boot discs out on the web which can be burnt to CD-R. Problem solved. My second impression is this game ROCKS. Presentation is just top-notch and it's so much fun blowing stuff up. These guys are really pushing the limits of what the DC can do. So far the game has sold 10k units in Japan which is fucking stellar for a system that has been "dead" for several years. Here's to more DC ports and now I want to track down a copy of Border Down. Yep, no reason to be region limited on the DC. I'm hearing good things about this, I really should go ahead & buy this.
iainl
I'm just slightly worried about the rotating firing scheme. After years of playing home ports of the likes of Robotron and other games which had to implement this scheme on systems with a single joystick, it was so liberating being able to aim with one stick and fire with the other as God (in the personification of Eugene Jarvis) intended that going back again is more than a touch disappointing. It's really not a big problem, I got used to it in minutes. The play field is narrow enough that you probably only have a total rotation field of about 75 degrees or so. I didn't find myself thinking about it at all after a couple of games.
dogbert
Conversation with my wife today on the phone: Her: "Stan came over to take away the spare TV, said he was going to take the Sega & Nintendo from underneath it too" Me: "Sega?? Nintendo??" Her: "He means the Dreamcast . Don't worry, he's not really taking it" Me: "Just heard a new Dreamcast game came out in Japan. 2006 & they're still making games" Her: "So have you ordered it yet?" Me: "Wasn't planning on it..." Her: "Go on & order it". I love my wife Game ordered I love the control method in Zero Gunner 2 so I'll be interested to see how this compares. You won't regret it. I haven't tried Zero Gunner 2, that is one that *I* need to track down. There was actually another new DC game (shooter) released in Japan this week called Radirgy, but I have not been hearing good things about it at all and I'm not a big fan of the artistic design. GreenMonkey
I'll have to try this out. Maybe my obsessive pirate-every-game-in-existence friend probably downloaded this already. Maybe I can borrow his copy to try out. I don't have the money to blind-import a game these days. I will buy a real copy of it, though, if I like, I promise! I like shmup games but I'm not that great at them. Ikaruga pwned me. This isn't as hard as Ikaruga, is it?
Romier S
ARGH! I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive. Hopefully later today.

I like shooters but I'm no expert, and this is just about my proper skill level thus far.

dogbert
I haven't played it yet! Been sitting in Texas with my DC, and I haven't been. Just opened it up today so impressions next week when I get a chance to hook up the DC etc.
dogbert
It's odd seeing a DC game in a DVD case (the only other one I've seen is Cosmic Smash's odd sized case).

Yep, I had the same impression earlier in the thread. I wish they would have stuck with a jewel case or done a cool CE type box.
