Rob B
It's denotes the fret position: http://guitarsecrets.com/guitar_secrets.htm So in this solo example http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/p/pearl_jam/yellow_ledbetter_solo_tab.htm if I am understanding you correctly it be like G cohrd stating on the 4 fret than g chord again stating on the 6th freat his time b chord staing on 5th fret repeat e chord staring on the 7th fret and so on? Not chords, just individual notes. G string pushed down on the 4th fret, then on the 6th fret, then the B string on the 5th fret... In tabs your low E string is at the bottom, high E at the top. For some reason that suddenly seems backwards to me.
Rainmaykr
For some reason that suddenly seems backwards to me. I've always thought that too. But, considering how easy tab was made for guitarists, the powers that be may have decided to keep with the theme and list the strings in the order you see them looking down - so as not to confuse us easilly confused guitar players. Rob B
ok maybe the beter question what is the diffrence between the two?
Rainmaykr
ok maybe the beter question what is the diffrence between the two? Well, in this case, a note is created by fretting ONE string. A chord is created by fretting at least 3 strings, simultaneously.
Rob B
Hmmm I think I see so basicaly e----------------7-----------------/-------------------------------| B-------5~---5------7^--7--7h5--7~-/-------------------------------| G--4h6-----------------------------/-11--9------------9------9h11^-| D----------------------------------/-------11--9--11-----11--------| A----------------------------------/-------------------------------| E----------------------------------/-------------------------------| One finger On the g string on the forth fret the one on the g string at the sixth fret one on the b string at the 5 fret repeat one on the e string at the 7th fret..................... And just pluck that string for each "note"
Rainmaykr
Perfect. Just make sure you nail the hammer from 4 to 6 on G. If you know the tune, you'll be able to tell what to do with the "5~" and the "7^". Good luck and have fun.
Rob B
and thanks for not making a joke about the g string I can't beleave I pharsed it that way. Hammer as in pluck Hard?
Covak
Hammer as in pluck Hard? Just bring a finger down on the fret nice and hard, and don't pluck the string... Like, index finger on the 4th fret, pluck the string, then bring your middle finger down hard on the 6th fret, no pluck. In the case of the "7h5" do the opposite. Have a finger on 7 and one on 5, pluck for the 7 and then just pull off to the 5.

Mastering these two simples tools, however, takes a lot of time. When you do master them, though, the world is your oyster. They are the two building blocks from which 90% of all rock/blues guitar "tricks" are built upon.
