LucasArts: KOTOR 3, Mercenaries 2 in development

This is the first I have heard of this...sorry if I am late:

LucasArts' recent silence by no means equals inactivity. On the contrary, Knights of the Old Republic 3, in development with Obsidian Development, is in the early stages of creation for a late 2006 -- most likely a 2007 -- release. The game should feature more seamless interaction between NPCs and the lead character, as well as better, more economic interactions between party members. We predict the combat system will go entirely realtime, as opposed to partially realtime (the way it was in KOTOR 1 and 2), and RPG fans will be able to enjoy more distinct shades of gray recognized by characters instead of the black and white distinctions made in the first two iterations of the series.

While that's in development, Pandemic and LucasArts will deliver a knockout sequel to the surprise action game, Mercenaries in late 2006. Pandemic is working on it for both Xbox 360 and PS3 right now, IGN has learned, and it will include a more developed storyline, bigger, more realistic environments, more weapons and weapon packages, and though we're not sure, a significant online component.

Great to hear KOTOR 3 is coming. I loved both of the original games (yes I enjoyed KOTOR 2 as well besides the brief ambiguous ending video, I mention that because I know some folks here did not). Though I'm not exactly overwhelmed with joy to hear the series may be moving into full real time combat. I've always liked KOTOR's psuedo turn based/real time engine. I'll gladly give it a whirl, but after being left decidedly disappointed in Jade Empire's combat system I'm apprehensive.

I'm among the few who thought he combat in Jade Empire rocked. If it can be implemented in KOTOR3, that would so totally kick ass.

:barf ;)

Seriously though, I didn't completely dislike the combat system in Jade. Certain aspects of it were disappointing to me. If they can work out some of the issues (such as the bloody useless henchman for instance) and get the game working with the same three party setup decently well, I'd be happy to give it a try.

As long as the game doesn't have the technical problems that KOTOR2 had, I'll be happy. I enjoyed both Knights games, but ran into a couple of nasty bugs in the sequel. Not sure where they'd take the story though, unless they go completely peripheral and start fresh with new characters (which might be nice). I'll definitely be pissed if they pull another "Jedi who wakes up not remembering anything" story-it was OK once, but twice was too many times. There has to be another way to start. Maybe ala Fable and have you start as a kid in the academy (who'll probably turn out to secretly be Revan's child)? :)

I'd say that will be the most effective method of continuing the series Chris. The Revan storyline has been wrapped up IMO, its time to move on and start fresh. A new host of characters, and a new time frame to set the story too will do wonders for the game. I hope this time around Obsidian are given the time they need to full complete test, and complete the game to thier liking this time around also. I do believe they have alot of talent (these are same people that brought us Planescape Torment afterall), and seeing as KOTOR was thier "break in" title I expect great things from them in the future.

i am confused, i thought there was a sequel to mercenaries already coming out in a couple of months called the outfit.:) anyway, i am still waiting for them to make mercenaries BC.

they turned KOTOR 2 over so quickly, i am interested to see how it turns out now that they have had some time to actually spend on development.

This sounds like a horrible idea to me. It's as if they tried to define the one element that made KotOR so unique, and then decided to remove it.
