Scar
If any of you guys are going to be trying out the beta and would like some help learning the ropes, please create your character in Bastok as this is where I will be creating my beta character. I'm not sure I'll be leveling it up much as I actively play on the Pandemonium server but would be more than happy to provide tips, recommendations, etc. For those of you who are wondering why I'm posting this here, the next OXM has the FFXI beta on the demo disc.:tu
Rainmaykr
Soon as I get it in the mail I'll head straight over to Bastok. I noticed you finally got your 360. Woot! We should PGR it some time.
Scar
Rain, send me an invite anytime you see me on PGR. That is currently my only XBOX360 game until the FFXI beta of course... Also, if you create a character in Bastok, it is best to choose a Hume or Galka race so that you get a special ring that give you pluses to DEX and VIT. See you in the Beta. JoeyN
Ill probably check out the FFXI beta, but wont be paying once it comes out
foogledricks
How does FFXI compare to WoW, since that is the only MMO I've played. How is it different, how is it the same, how is it better and worse?
Rainmaykr
I saw you were already playing Scar. My OXM hasn't arrived yet. Hopefully today or tomorrow.
Scar
kfredericks, unfortunately, I have never played WoW so I would be unable to compare and contrast... However, I can tell you that it is highly addictive as I have been playing it for almost two years. Rain, I got it all installed and played for a couple of hours last night. Graphics are definitely better than my PS2 but not enough that it makes you go "WOW"! My in game character name is "Scar". Big surprise, huh? If we get enough folks from LCVG on the beta, I'll get us a LinkShell so we can always communicate regardless of where we are in the game. Tonight is "date night" with the wife so I'll probably see you guys online this weekend.
Magness
How does FFXI compare to WoW, since that is the only MMO I've played. How is it different, how is it the same, how is it better and worse? I played both games on PC for a while so I can offer a small comparisson between FFXI and WOW... First is the PlayOnline service from Square. Now, I liked FFXI but this service was a terrible setup and from what I understand this will remain on the 360 version. WOW account setup is pretty easy (as you probably know) so I would say Warcraft would win for ease of setup. As far as gameplay, I liked both games - they just have a very unique feel to each. I never really had any issues with latency or technical problems in FFXI but, I did occasionally have issues in WOW and as I'm sure you know, Warcraft has had alot of server probs too. FFXI is an older title than WOW so the graphics are not as "up to date" as what you've seen in Warcraft but, they are not bad by any stretch. They have a great art style and the graphics definitely have a Final Fantasy feel to them. I personally feel that quests are better in WOW but the quests are a strong point of FFXI too. Travel is similiar in that you go to a town or city and use a "vehicle" (like a Griphon in WOW or an airship in FFXI) and you can own mounts in both games. There were always lots of people on playing in both games so I don't rememebr ever having an issue grouping. Having said that, Grouping and Raiding was easier in WOW but, thats just my opinion. Leveling is slower paced in FFXI but thats not a bad thing The only other points that come to mind are that FFXI had a fair amount of spawn camping when I played it but, WOW has quest item camping so its really just a trade-off. If I were to make a recomendation I would say join the beta and try it out. Its free and easy to get (OXM Disc) so why not treat it like any other demo and give it a shot. Dave C
I'm definitely going to check out the OXM demo but like Joey, I most likely will not pay to play.
Romier S
Ok, so how exactly do you uninstall this thing from your HD? EDIT: Forget it, I found it.

Rainmaykr
That good huh? This monster consumes 5GB of harddrive space. :eh
bickle
...and takes forever to install. At least an hour and a half, probably closer to 2. I wish I could say it was worth it, but I had no idea what to do when I finally logged in. There was no real guidance, and I couldn't find anything to kill. It didn't help that all of the text in the interface was super-super tiny. Yet the text on all the PlayOnline stuff was huge. BTW: What the heck is the pointer icon in PlayOnline supposed to be? bendak
Got the disc in the mail today, but I'm not sure if I should even bother trying it...my standards are high (WoW) and the reports I've heard so far are less than spectacular. 2 hours you say? :barf
GrumpyElf
Over 2 hours to install this.... but on the good side of it, only 3 minutes to get the hell of my Xbox WoW and Guild Wars for me. Tom
Romier S
BTW: What the heck is the pointer icon in PlayOnline supposed to be? It's supposed to be a Chocobo. Starting out in Bastok will give you a better impression of the game as it's not quite as maze like as the other two starting cities. As for the actual game itself, this is the third time I've played it (having done so on the PC, and the PS2). I suppose I installed it out of morbid curiosity to see what improvements had been made, but it was a waste of two hours. I uninstalled it last night after showing it to Phil and Joey in person since they were curious to see it. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. I supposed I've played too many MMO's to go back to this style of "grinding" for the sake of grinding online game. I've no interest in dealing with the cumbersome interface, and much less supporting a straight shaky port of a three year old game running on hardware that should be displaying this game at far better framerates than what it is (even in beta form). Not too mention the early goings of the game are completely uncompelling and it requires grinding up 10-15 levels to get to any of the really interesting content. With Guild Wars seeing a new expansion in a short couple of months, there's just no way I can bring myself to care.
bickle
Do you have to cancel anything, or can I just uninstall it?

MastaRedSnappa
I installed this thing over the weekend (no, it didn't take the whole weekend... pretty close though!). After installing FFXI on the PS2 and PC, I was kind of hoping that the Play Online interface was somehow improved over time. Sadly, no. Play Online is the worst interface I've ever seen. You have to go through so many freakin' steps to do anything, it's ridiculous. Now, grinding is a commonly accepted feature of MMO's gameplay, but in the interface to start the MMO?! I think if they somehow accidentally shipped FFXI with the archaic DOS-based interface Fry's uses on its store computers, it would be considered A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. That's how f'in bad Play Online is. Of course, after hours of installing and updating the Play Online service, then FFXI itself, you have the "joy" of entering serial numbers using some kind of ancient hieroglyphic input device that vaguely resembles a keyboard using your 360 controller. So I finally, log into the game and try to create my own character. Unless my memory is failing, it doesn't look any different. No new character creation options were added like additional faces, hairstyles, etc. Maybe I'm just spoiled by City of Heroes/Villains' character creation options. Anyway, I pick some options and then try to name my character and login. No go. Well, I thought to myself, FFXI has been out for quite awhile so maybe "Cloudisgay" is already taken. So I try the random name generator. Nope. I try the random name generator again and add "XYZ" to the name. Nada. I even try just randomly choosing letters using only my unit (yes, I game with no pants on... you should try it, it's really rather freeing). Denied. Apparently, they're experiencing some kind of problem with the influx of beta testers. Yeah, I would consider not being able to log in as a problem but I would have hoped that they knew there would be a large influx of players. Nice first impression for what was heralded as such a coup for the Xbox 360 (although I gotta admit, getting Square-Enix to develop games at all for the 360 is a coup and a positive sign for the 360's future). Having played many MMOs including Ultima Online, Everquest, Dark Ages of Camelot, Everquest Online Adventures (PS2), FFXI (PS2 and PC), City of Heroes/Villains, and World of Warcraft, if the only MMO you've played is WoW, you'll be sorely disappointed by FFXI. WoW is so much more player-friendly with tons of quests everywhere, customizable UI, faster general travel, no XP loss for dying, etc. I think getting WoW on the 360 would be the real coup. Scar
Ok, so the beta is over and the full version is being released today. On the off chance that someone at LCVG is picking this up and needs a server, let me know and I'll be more than happy to send you a world pass to the Pandemonium server. I know how high on the list this game is for so many of you here at LCVG!
Hank Scorpio
Hey Scar, You act as if I didn't spend a solid 20 minutes on the Beta with you! I saw in the adverts this week that it's being released, but I can't say I'm overly excited about it yet. The reason being - as we discussed on Live, the text is just too difficult to read. I know you had left feedback during the Beta about this issue, and I wonder if enough people complained and somehow the text size was increased. If not this game though, you can bet that I'll be able to join you when Phantasy Star Online is released for the 360! your fellow simple chatter, Hank aka Pud aka Jason
Scar
Hey Pud, yes, the text was increased in a patch that SE released last month. So, this part of the game is definitely better. I don't know for sure if I'll keep playing this game on my PS2 or if I'll completely migrate to the Xbox version. I play FFXI using one of those Logitech NetPlay controllers that makes it convenient to play and type. The Xbox version does not have a current setup so I may go with convenience over graphics improvement. However, if enough friends move over to the Xbox version it may be a moot point as you can chat using the Xbox Live feature. Simple Chatter representing! Hank Scorpio
Text size increased, eh? Hmmm. Dag, don't start tempting me to pick this up now! I was all set to buy Tomb Raider next week. Really, as much as I'd like to check this out, I'm also afraid of the time commitment. I still have 80 hours of Oblivion to get through! Cheers, Jason
