Kobe scores 81... and hardly anyone cares. :)

I busted a gut when I saw the thread title, as I was just saying the exact same thing over IM before I saw this thread. He's what I wrote specifically,....

Kobe scored 81 points yesterday. Wow, that makes him the best player in the NBA that I don't give two shits about.

Man, no love for Kobe (or the NBA for that matter) here.

It's the single greatest individual performance I've ever seen in any major team sport. After the game ended, I was reminded of the scene from Tombstone after Wyatt Earp kills Curly Bill:

"You ever seen somethin' like that before?

"Hell, I never even heard of something like that."

"Where is he?"

"Down by the creek, walking on water."

Part of the Kobe thing is because of his public persona. The whole Colorado thing soured most people on Kobe.

The thing that was said earlier really bugged me, but I couldn't put my finger on it....

He needs to be a ballhog for the Lakers to win any games. It's not out of selfishness that he scores so much, but out of necessity.

He took 46 shots. 46! In my opinion, there are more than a few players in the history of the league that could have scored 81 if they would have shot the ball 46 times.

Things like this just remind me of how much I hate Professional Basketball. I used to love the sport, but when you have guys putting it up that many times, that just isn't entertaining to me. I have the same feelings for A.I. and Lebron when they chuck it up that many times as well. It disgusts me when I hear that some guy scored 40 on 13 of 32 shooting. The game has such a poor product at this point that stuff like this is going to come up more and more often because players feel that they need to showcase themselves rather than showcasing their teams.

End rant.

That about sums up my thinking. It's not that he isn't a great player, it's that the sport has degraded to the point where the only talking points are how many points XXX puts up per game. Why not just field the best player from both teams and let them go one on one? There would be as much teamwork as now and a little more honesty in how the game was played.

Meh ... I just don't care.

46? Wilt took 63 shots and 32 free throws to get to 100 (plus he had at least 2 other games where he took 60 or more shots). Kobe took 46 and 20 to get to 81. As far as other players who could have scored 81 with 46 shots, all I can say is that only two people in the HISTORY of the NBA have even broken the 80 point barrier-- Wilt and Kobe. I think if it were just a matter of taking a lot of shots, those two wouldn't be so lonely at the top.

2nd best is still...2nd best.

Yeah, you're right. Whichever team loses the Super Bowl should have to kill themselves right after the game ends because despite however great their season was that got them to the Super Bowl, they came in second and in the process, embarrassed themselves, their families, their teams, and their fans by not winning the Super Bowl.

Yes, I think some people are forgetting that to take that many shots and still have a passable percentage, a player either has to create high percentage shots or hit quite a few low percentage shots. You can't just let a 20 ppg guy take twice as many shots and expect him to score 40. Each bucket becomes harder and harder to get as the other team adapts.

It should be noted before I say anything that I am one of Kobe's biggest critics (for many reasons) and a longtime Laker hater. I have been a longtime Spurs fan (ever since David Robinson entered the league) and appriciate the way they play the game as a team. That being said...

What Kobe did was phenomenal. It was the greatest individual display of basketball skill I have ever seen. Most of his pts (55 to be exact) came in the 2nd half during a Laker comeback. They were down by 14pts at halftime and Kobe outscored the entire Raptor team 55 to 41....55 to 41! Yes it is the Raptors but these are professional NBA players. I dont care who was on the floor at the time...what Kobe did was incredible. If you cannot recognize that then your hatred for the NBA or basketball in general is blinding you....or you are just truely ignorant of the game (not to be rude) and what it takes to do what he did against professional NBA players.

And yes I will still hate on Kobe and the Lakers. He is a great basketball player but I dont respect him as a man and my hatred for the city of LA will never die. :)

People still watch the NBA?

My thoughts exactly.

Someone must be watching since ESPN decided to bump the entire NFL conference championship coverage from the lead story in favor of Kobe's 81. :D

Whatever.

Sure, my "Super Bowl loser should kill themselves" comment is totally extreme (and hopefully understood as sarcasm), but I put it out there to apply an extreme example of the "2nd best is still only... 2nd best" line of thinking to the biggest sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl. It's ironic that in the Football Begins... thread, you seem to be saying that your team just going to the Super Bowl (whether they win or lose) was good enough for you. But here, you put down Kobe's achievement because he's still only second to Wilt. What gives?

Exactly. If it were so easy to score, teams would just give all the shots to their best scorer or highest percentage shooter. Averaging 50 points a game would be commonplace. That's not reality though.

I'm the exact opposite. ;) I'm a longtime Laker fan and one of Kobe's biggest supporters. However, I do agree with you about the Spurs. They are one of the few rare teams that plays like a team offensively and defensively. I think Greg Popovich is the best coach in the NBA. Sure, I'd love the Lakers to have a more balanced team like the Spurs or Pistons. But the fact of the matter is, they don't. Without Kobe, the Lakers would be one of the worst teams in the NBA. With him, they're a marginal playoff team. The Lakers aren't going to win a championship with their current personnel no matter how much team basketball they play. Given that, with his play this year, Kobe has brought an excitement back to this franchise that has been missing since their championship years.

And yes I will still hate on Kobe and the Lakers. He is a great basketball player but I dont respect him as a man and my hatred for the city of LA will never die.

But you gotta admit, no matter how much of a ballhog he is (and he definitely is one, sometimes out of necessity, sometimes not), he brings it every night. He's constantly working on his game and shows up ready to play. Sadly, you can't say that about all these multi-millionaires, not just in the NBA, but in every major sport.

I hadn't seen the highlights until I watched Sportscenter last night. I have even less respect for the 81 now. Toronto wasn't even playing defense. It was awful. He just, literally, ran right by guys to get to the hoop for at least 10 of those baskets.

I saw the game but I don't agree with your assessment. However, for the sake of argument, let's just say that he had 10 layups and take those out of his scoring total. That means that he still made 18 outside shots (including 7 of 13 threes) and scored 61 points! No matter how bad the Raptors are defensively, they are still filled with guys with healthy egos who wouldn't just let someone embarrass them by dropping 81 on them. It's not like the Raptors routinely give up 50+ point games (let alone 80+ point games) to opposing players.

"Kobe" appears with the word "team" entirely too many times in this sentence.

Gotta give him props, though. I mean, in a time where he's criticized for being a ball hog, he says "fuck ya'll" and proceeds to go off like he just doesn't care anymore. Some people will go down in history as complete and superior in every respect, you know the ones that make others around them better while still shining at their position (Jordan). And some will go down in history as simply great players (Iverson/Kobe). Given how little I could care about the sport's health these days, I'm fine with getting spammed with inane newscasts whenever either type has a monster game. It's all stuff I'll need to know to pwn my friends at Trivial Pursuit. (For the pie, "Which rapist said "Fuck Ya'll" and proceeded to go off on the Raptors for 81 points like he just didn't care any more?")

Just because Showtime has become One-Man Show doesn't mean I'll care any less when my Spurs win the West. :P
