iainl
I got the bundle of wip3out:SE and Destruction Derby 2 for a mere ?15 yesterday, and thought I'd share its existence with you all; fellow PAL people may want it, for a start. Firstly, W'O''3 - Blimmin' 'Eck. I've got the basic wip3out, along with wipEout (PS, PS, SS) and wipEout 2097 (aka XL, on PC and PS) already, so passed on this initially, which was a monumentally dumb thing to do. The extra tracks are just brilliant; racing the mighty Gare D'Europa again, this time with the new teams and analogue handling, is worth the price of entry alone. Secondly, DD2 - WTF? I'm sure someone (possibly not here) said something positive about this recently. Which totally baffles me. I can obviously forgive the overblown lens flare at the expense of a draw distance that would embarrass Saturn Daytona as a product of its time, as are the naff digital controls, but the game just makes no sense at all. I've yet to finish a race in the top ten on the easiest difficulty level, and the points awarded for crashing seem to make no sense at all. Am I missing something, or is this just rubbish that isn't on a par with the first one? edit - I edited the title, as this is really about wip3out; ripping a really old PS1 game apart is slightly unfair. iainl
Oh, and for a follow-on question, I was wondering if anyone else had a favorite team and why? I'm an AG-Systems fan, myself. Love the design, love the "Lets Be Friends!" tagline, most of all love the handling. Its a great balance between going like the clappers and yet not having the dire acceleration of a Icaras or the dull handling of a Goteki-45. Also, the dart-like shape is wonderful. Feisar obviously have the "classic" craft design, but its a bit too yellow for me.
dogbert
Wipeout3SE is lovely, isn't it? And criminally ignored. Was a great idea to pull in the old tracks for a revamp - such great design, such a great series. Noone seems to have captured the sheer simplicity & joy for the first two games in any of the modern "futuristic racers" like Quantum Redshift. DD2 was poo when it came out, and still is. I wasn't a huge fan of DD1, but they completely screwed the handling in 2. Different team developing it etc. DD is a franchise that Pignoses left on the shelf for too long. iainl
DD2 may well be rubbish, but it so easily worth every penny and more of the ?15 to get the SE of wip3out that I just don't care. It really is quite magical, and I'd forgotten just how good it looks. I'd just been playing some Halo and Orta, so was fully awaiting a shock at PS1 graphics, but thanks to the sheer quantity of style the thing doesn't look dated at all. Chris F
Was Wip3out (Wipeout 3) SE a UK only release?
dogbert
Yes, Wipeout 3SE was a UK only release (and a budget release in small numbers too). I once mailed SCEA about it to see if they were interested in bringing it out & they claimed to have never heard of it. Sigh. Wipeout just does not get any love this side of the Atlantic. I'd surely love to have that SE also...but like you said Brian, Wipeout just doesn't get the love from Sony over here. I guess futuristic racing is too much for the nascar crowd to handle, must be the mixture of left AND right hand turns.
Chris F
So there's hardly a chance I'd be able to find it, let alone play it on my US PS2... I LOVE the Wipeout series, and would love to get my hands on a copy of that.
dogbert
So there's hardly a chance I'd be able to find it, let alone play it on my US PS2... It's definitely find-able on ebay UK & from "contacts" in the UK - it's hard to find, but not impossible or ultra expensive. As you say though, it won't play on a stock US PS2. Camp
I'm jealous too! SE would be great to see over here.
iainl
Actually, as part of my original point of starting the thread was to say, its become easily available over here again - people who can cope with PAL can now get the bundle for ?15 (I just found it in my local video shop). Amazon UK don't have any today, but appear to think they can get more easily enough.
dogbert
Ahhh, so it's been re-released? Cool, I thought you just got them in a deal somewhere. That's good news. Actually, that's another perfect example of the differences between the UK & US markets... Over here in the US, the PSX budget scene is utter trash - nasty kiddie games & the occasional Japanese gem from Agetec. In the UK, there's a /ton/ of very cheap PSX classics available for very good prices, along with a flow of cheap new titles - nothing exciting, but still ticking along (although it's probably slowed down bigtime in the last year). The PSX really is the king format.
Calvin
You know,so many reviews for Wipeout 3 here in the US were mediocre at best - but for some reason it is my favorite of the Wipeout series,
Camp
I wouldn't call 3 my favorite but I did really like it. Anything Wipeout is great.
iainl
Speaking of PS1 re-releases, those in the UK who haven't experienced Brian's coding before can get a bundle of all 3 PS1 GTA games (1, London and 2) for ?15 as well. Not bad, in the unlikely event that someone doesn't have them.
Beer Monkey
Regarding the 'SE' version of Wipeout 3, I was frickin pissed that it didn't come stateside. I was dying to play some of the original Wipeout tracks with the better engine. Turns out there is a patch that should let the modchip crowd play this in NTSC. http://www.megagames.com/psx/psx_patches_w.shtml If anybody can help this Yank get ahold of the original europe SE disc at a reasonable price, I'd greatly appreciate it... iainl
Amazon UK do it for ?15 (don't worry about the fact it doesn't say its the SE, it is), and you can get this bundle a bunch of other places (gameplay.com, simplygames.com etc) as well, if you're prepared to import. ooh. Just noticed that they do Tekken 2 and Soul Blade (the precursor to the glory that is Soul Calibur) for ?15 as well, which would be a bargain if I didn't already own them. dogbert
Gameplay.com will happily ship to the US, unlike Amazon.co.uk when it comes to games.
Beer Monkey
Alas, it looks like Gameplay only has the non-SE version.
iainl
really? I'd have thought they would have the double-pack. Its blocked at work, though, so I'll check tonight.
iainl
Arse. Remembered the sidestep around the blocking of the front-page, and got in, only to discover they don't do this two-pack. I'll see if I can find another site for you.
Graeme
The GTA 3 pack is available in North America also. $30 US. On a more related not, I picked up a new Wipeout Fusion for $10 today... now I just need a PS2. I should have picked up 3 real cheap when I had the chance. Beer Monkey
Alas, I still have not found a way to buy the PAL Wipeout 3 SE and have it shipped to the USA. If anyone comes up with any ideas or sources, please pass them along to me. :?
iainl
Yeah, annoyingly none of the usual places I look will ship to the US if they have it, or don't have it and do ship...
Camp
So, who should I bug via email to get Wipeout3SE ported to the US PS2?? BTW, check this out: http://www.wipeoutzone.com/ -a whole fansite with forum dedicated to the Wipeout series.
