Codemasters TOCA 2006 for PSP

Codemasters has announced TOCA Race Driver 2006 for the PSP.

The following quotes are from an email they sent out, not from the link above.

We've had a lot of feedback from the US requesting a release of the PSP (PlayStation? Portable) version of Race Driver 2 west of the Atlantic, and today I can say your prayers have been answered. In fact, not just answered, but we've gone a bit further.

Race Driver 2006 PSP is the title you'll want to make a note of, as we've extended the game beyond the European version of TRD2 PSP to such an extent a name change was deserved. 10 extra tracks, 10 extra cars and a whole new game mode tailored to the short bursts of play associated with handheld gaming.

Sounds good to me!

Cool, the PSP's been crying out for a racing game, a very under-represented genre on that machine ;)

LOL, point taken. But so far, I haven't really been happy with any of the racing games on the PSP, save Burnout Legends. To me this is the first 'serious' racing game for the platform, at least for the US.

Hopefully it doesn't suck. There were a lot of bitter complaints about CMR on the PSP, centered around how difficult the controls were, I'm hoping that Codemasters have ironed out things like that by now, given that this is their 3rd PSP racing title.

Oh I know what you mean. There's been a number of "serious" racers in Europe, including a Grand Prix game, but nothing over here.

Been playing this for a few days, very fun.

Definitely not as hard as the console version, I think they have made some concessions on handling, recovering from slippage seems easier, especially with the tougher cars like the Formula Fords. This isn't to say I haven't lost control of the car, I have many times, but it seems less likely than on the Xbox version.

The nub is hard to make fine adjustments with, but I think the have made allowances for this too, because you can tap it left or right and still maintain control. They also have done a great job of adapting the accelerator to a digital button. I miss being able to ease the accelerator up and down, but this is about as good as you can expect with a button on a more simmy racer.

These changes add up, but are still rather subtle overall. The game definitely has the feel of the console version. I'm in the DTM section of the career right now and it's a blast as it was on the Xbox.

Probably the biggest negative compared to the home console is because of the lower resolution, you can't rely on watching the track as a guide to when to brake. You have to learn the tracks a little better. It's also easy to come up on a turn and find yourself smashing into another car. So having a better memory for the tracks helps there too because the damage modeling is excellent.

Haven't seen any of the new material yet, but there are 10 new tracks and also a bunch of new cars in the PSP version which is great.

Overall this takes the crown for best PSP racer IMO. And even though it's been dumbed down just a touch with respect to the handling, I think they were justifiable concessions to make the game playable on a portable.
