rustyjaw
For the first time in eons, I've actually seen all the best picture nominees.
Romier S
Episode III snubbed in the effects department. Capote, and Brokeback should clean up this year I think. Great to see Hoffman get some recognition. The guy is a fantastic actor. Loved him in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and well just about anything he's been in to be quite honest. secretvampire
No huge surprises, but I'm glad to see Good Night and Good Luck get so much recognition. I thought that was just a kick-ass film. Big fan of Capote as well.
Rainmaykr
If you played a gay person or a gender-bender, you're a great actor.
The Daisy
Only 1 down for me (Brokeback Mountain). I hope I can watch the others before the ceremony though. I will say that I did think Brokeback was a very good movie, but it wasn't in that "best picture of the year" category for me. Glen
Jordan_E
I'm dreading going over to HTF, to read some angst that King Kong didn't receive any major nominations, where I find it rather refreshing for the Academy to nominate apparently deserving films (I haven't seen any of the Best Picture noms, because when I get a day off from watching my daughter...I catch up on my DVDs in my HT). rustyjaw
Hoffman is amazing, don't forget Magnolia and Boogie Nights as well. I would not want to have to choose between Hoffman and Ledger this year. Where Hoffman creates a powerful persona, Ledger simply becomes a deeply conflicted man, whose struggles are more inward than on the surface. They are very different roles, which makes them hard to compare. Goodnight, and Good Luck was wonderful, and Strathairn was fantastic. My only complaint is that the story felt like it was cut short. Also Strathairn wasn't given as much to work with, as Morrow's emotional range through the whole movie was pretty narrow. But he was amazing nonetheless. It's good to see Crash nominated too, really good movie. It's really a parable more than anything, as the situations that develop and intersect are a little too engineered to be anything but a way to convey the message. But it's a good message in any case. I'm happy that Gyllenhaal got some recognition as Ledger is getting most of the attention (deservedly), but Gyllenhaal's performance was also exceptional. I really need to see "Walk the Line"
The Daisy
You nailed it there regarding Ledger. He made that film. He was tremendous. I really have to see Crash and Goodnight and Good Luck. Glen
rustyjaw
Oh yeah, I couldn't be happier to see "Curse of the were-Rabbit" nominated!
The Daisy
I just noticed Murderball was nominated for best documentary. That was a sensational film. Glen
Whooter
I just noticed Murderball was nominated for best documentary. That was a sensational film. Glen Agreed! Might have been the best movie no one saw last year...
Dave C
How the hell did William Hurt get nominated for his few minutes on camera?
Angry the Clown
Sith getting Make-Up is quite an oddity given the dominance of CG over creature make up in the prequel trilogy. Besides the aliens with the funny teeth, about three wookies and Palpatine, is there much else it had to go on to garner that nomination when it might have been more worthy for effects and/or sound and sound editing? Knightley is a curious one too. The portrayal of an archetypal English rose in a period film is almost as popular with the Academy as an actor portraying someone with a disability. Not even the British Academy considered her performance good enough to even be granted a BAFTA nomination next month. I’m glad Batman Begins got recognition for its cinematography given the approach to shooting that film is just so rare these days (anamorphic with no digital intermediate), but it’s a shame it missed out on Production Design. A real shame. It’s thankfully got a lot more BAFTA nominations in the technical categories. Wheras I've seen none... Same here (of the live action nominees anyway). I’d like to, but will I get round to it? Eh….They have all literally only just opened here mind you, so I can’t see them disappearing anytime soon. I’m such a long time Phil Hoffman fan I’ll at least take the time to see Capote when it hits cinemas here at the end of February whether I have to go on my own or not. Here are this years BAFTA nominations for those interested. Quite interesting to compare which way the British and American film academies nominate each year. iainl
I'll note that Bafta win 3-0 in the "how many of the foreign-language films has Iain heard of" category, for starters.

The British Academy’s obsession with nominating T-Bone Burnett for original score continues as well I noticed.

PHiL
whether you agree or disagree, i think Keira Knightley deserves to be up there with the other actresses.. She most likely will not win but its about time someone has noticed her when it comes to awards time.
