GreenMonkey
:rock http://www.georgerrmartin.com/news.html 12 hours per book. BAD ASS. George RR Martin writes fantasy the way fantasy should be. THIS is the kind of quality fantasy I'd like to see out there. I am a LOTR movie fanboy and all, but JRR Tolkien's stuff tends to the black and white (ya, there's some gray area stuff, but it's mostly heroes vs bad guys). Give me a source with strong, developed characters (yes, even the 'bad' guys) that lives in the gray, rather than the black and white world of good & evil any day. Union Carbine
I tried to read A Game of Thrones and just couldn't get into it. Still, I'm excited that a fantasy series is getting some love from HBO. I'll definitely tune in.
TimS
Figures, I finally cancel my HBO subscription to just go for Netflix and this comes out. Oh well, I suppose I can get the DVDs from Netflix eventually
Sparkz
I really enjoy these books, and cannot wait for the next one to be published. However, one aspect that I have been uncomfortable with is the age of the children in the books and what they experience at such a young age. I don't think it would hurt the TV series to advance their ages a bit. I know HBO series can push the envelope a bit, but I can see people having some issues with plot aspects such as Daenerys being married (and later pregnant) at 13 years old. There is a lot of potential for this to become a great TV series, especially since Martin is not afraid to kill off his main characters . My worry is that 7 books (only 4 of which are currently written) at 1 season per book could get expensive for HBO. I hope its not animated. Ron
So after seeing this thread, I decided to read a couple of the books... I've now gone through A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. The stories are good... I enjoy how it's not just all magic & elves & dwarves & us vs. Big-Bad-Evil... I agree with Sparkz in wondering if they'll age-up some of the characters; aside from dealing with what happens to them in the stories, would they be able to find child actors who could successfully play all those lead roles, convincingly? Either way, unless they'll be cutting out some plotlines entirely, this series will have an epic cast. If HBO can pull off Rome (which I feel they did), then I think they can do good things here as well. Looking forward to hearing more about it... and I think I'll grab the next couple novels in the meantime...
PoisonJam
I liked the first two or three books that I read but I have a crap memory so every time a new book comes out I have to re-read the other ones in order to re-acquaint myself with the characters. Especially in a series as complex as this one. I wish I had come across this series after all of the books had been written, instead of right in the middle. Me too, then I'd have the hardcovers, which are difficult to find now. I figured the books were all hype like those crappy Robert Jordan books. I found out too late that I was wrong
Tonner Cyn
Is anything known about the production status of the series? Is there an ETA for the series to start airing? In one of Martin's recent blog entries (at http://www.georgerrmartin.com) he mentioned that it would be cool to see something like a "coming next year" teaser at the end of next year's equivalent of The Sopranos (whew, is that convoluted enough? ). Anyway, while that is hardly solid info, it does seem to indicate that we may be just two years away from seeing this become reality. In Martin time, that's nothing! Ron
Pilot has been ordered.
GreenMonkey
Pilot has been ordered. Awesome! Ice & Fire is really a character drama with fantasy trappings - most of the mayhem in the books so far is all due to character conflict (very little supernatural stuff). I think it's a good fit for an HBO series.
General Zot
This is perfect for HBO miniseries format. Not action-packed like LOTR or Eragon, so the slower, longer runtime should allow for much better character development. Can't wait to see who they get to play the Imp, he's a pretty robust and meaty role for an actor to land. PS - Started reading this series due to the book suggestions on LCVG. So whoever suggested the series, thanks!
Tonner Cyn
Peter Dinklage has been the internet favorite for Tyrion for the longest time. He's not exactly starving for work though, so we'll see if he is someone they can get.
Tonner Cyn
According to Martin's Not A Blog update on his website, filming on the pilot for A Game of Thrones begins in October. He could not reveal any other details but it will be interesting to see who all they have cast.
Tonner Cyn
So, it is official - Peter Dinklage is Tyrion!
General Zot
Wow! This is really shaping up nicely. Can't wait to see it. I suggest Christopher Guest as Pieter (is that his name? The evil moneylender guy that takes over the sky castle...)
GreenMonkey
more casting updates: http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0884824/ Sean Bean to play Ned Stark (awesome!) General Zot
My greatest hope for this series is that George RR makes enough coin off the show that HE GETS OFF HIS ASS AND FINISHES THE DAMN BOOKS. Dude is driving me crazy with waiting.
JoeyN
Lena Heady has joined the cast as well now
Eric M
I was kind of hoping for Tricia Helfer for Cersei, buy Lena Heady will do nicely.
JoeyN
I was kind of hoping for Tricia Helfer for Cersei Yeah she would do good. I saw an interview with her the other day, and she is pretty busy without a lot of stuff, which is a shame as she wont be able to do this.
