Reasons to get a PSP...

Keeping in mind that I probably won't got to any lengths to "hack" the PSP, can you guys recommend some reasons for getting one?

I have a PS3. What cool things are you guys doing with the two of them together?

I love Lumines Live! on the 360, so I'll probably get Lumines I & II.

Can you play movie files on the PSP without having to hack it?

I was going to reply with a link to the homebrew thread, but since you ruled that out, I am fresh out of ideas.

Yes, it plays MPEG4 and AVC movies without hacking it, though if you DO hack it, you can play videos at native resolution, otherwise you have to run them in lower res.

If the library of games doesn't interest you, I don't think it's worth buying one. You'll find a lot of people say there's little of interest on the PSP, but the library's gotten quite a bit of variety in the last 4 or 5 months.

The video playback is good (Note, chances are you'll need to use something like PSPVideo to convert your xvid/divx files to a suitable format). The music playback is good. The game selection (for me) is good.

I don't think there's much to do "with" the pair of PS3/PSP apart from buying PSX games or using it as a glorified remote control at the moment...

PSP games cost too much, so every couple months I get Gamefly and catch up on all the games I've missed. And I anticipate the PS3==>PSP connection will bring a lot of fruit in the future as far as PS1 games. Primarily lately I use my PSP with DVDs. I rip a movie I want to watch to my CPU, then I convert it to PSP format and watch the movie on the train. The other day I watched Ground hog day. I got so into the movie that when I got home I popped in the DVD and finished watching where I left off.

The only reason I'm interested in the PSP now is the hacked PS1 emulation. I simply found there's only a couple of games that interest me. Movie/video playback does nothing for me. But I'm a rural dweller with no mass transit. I get portables for the unique games only, the portable part is only rarely of use.

Not to hijack, but does anyone know why the 1up Show doesn't play on my PSP? They format a version just for the PSP and it doesn't work. Plays fine on my PC. And even plays fine when I play it on my PC from my PSP. But my PSP can't play it. I rip movies to my PSP all the time, so I know where to put them and what to name them. Any thoughts? Might my firmware need to be updated?

I personally would say go ahead and get a PSP :) (I'd recommend Circuit City with the $40 off coupon) and its worth it even if you only use it as a Pocket Media Player and nothing else. For movies and audio - it is a very good MP3 player with support for album art, visualizations etc. and its a great movie player. There are lots of free programs (I like PSP Video Express) to convert DVD's to PSP ready video files. Also, memory sticks are pretty cheap right now - the 2gb SanDisk card is $49 at most places in-store now. As far as gaming, there are a ton of good PSP games now: Metal Gear Solid: PO, Syphon Filter: DM, Grand Theft Auto: VCS, Lumines I/II, Daxter, Valkyrie Profile, Etc. And remember you can also surf the Net on your PSP from any WiFi hotspot - None of which requires you to "hack" your PSP.

Having said that - you do not loose any functionality by loading a custom firmware on your PSP, you would gain the ability to rip and play your own PS1 games, play movies at full resolution, homebrew - like playing the old PC games like Sam N Max or Doom on your PSP and other features. And... If its a new purchase and a problem occurs with the firmware load then you could still exchange it/return it at the store.

:) Just food for thought...
