Gaming Headphones for the PC

Recommended Posts

I researched headphones to use on the PC a few months ago and the general consensus that I found online was that these "gaming" headphones with the built in microphone did not have the best sound quality. The recommendations were to go with just regular high quality headphones and clip a microphone to headphone cord. I haven't played any games that had voice chat yet, so haven't found a need for a mike. The kind I picked up was Audio Technica ATH-500, and wrote about them in the Home Theater Gear section. Its been a few months later, and I still love them...I prefer to use them even when my wife's not at home and I could be listening to speakers. For what its worth, the "Zalman clip microphone" was the one frequently suggestion to use in this kind of configuration.

I picked these up for $7 AR in November during the google checkout thing - $99 gaming headset (also available in black). $40 AR at buy.com right now.

It has a clip-on mic with a seperate cord that clips through/onto the headset cord. I was using the headphones with my mp3 player as I was very impressed with the sound quality. It got good reviews at $100 if you do some googling.

Well, I'm actually thinking of going this route:

Purchasing a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for $20 and using my existing wireless headset.

Gamers can get the most out of current and future Xbox 360 wireless accessories with the new Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. By plugging the compact receiver into a USB 2.0 port on the PC, the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 Wireless Headset and Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel can be used on a second platform.

Well, I went ahead and purchased the Logitech Premium Notebook Headset last night. I tested on Skype and Lord of the Rings Online. So far I'm very happy with it. The sound is very good for a small headset and based on the feedback from those I spoke with said the mic/voice quality on my end was very clear. The headset is very adjustable and light. Having used it for 3 hours, it seemed very comfortable. The true test will be when I get the time to do an MMO marathon session. The only minor draw back was that it took a while to find the right adjustment / position on my ears. That position is lost once you return the headset back to the storage case as it needs to sit flat in the case.

At $39.99 after CC's rebate, I could definitely recommend this headset, especially if your looking for something small/portable without any sacrifice to performance. Another quality product from Logitech.
