ChrisBardon
This past Christmas, I bought my wife her own DS lite, since I'd managed to get her hooked on Advance Wars, FF Tactics, and other turn based strategy games. For a change in pace though, she asked about a good puzzle game, and I was actually stumped on trying to think of one. Her question was actually whether there was anything out there like Pandora's Box, so probably a non-twitch puzzle game (since Trauma enter and EBA were both vetoed as requiring "too much co-ordination"). I couldn't think of anything offhand, so I got her started on Phoenix Wright, which is the closest thing I can think of to a "puzzle game". The better question though, is why isn't there a game like Pandora's Box on the DS? That was a great PC game, and really a natural for the DS. Is there another game that I'm missing though? Ron
Tetris DS has some cool, non-twitch, puzzle modes...
fighting fish
Meteos is a good puzzle game. I've never played Pandora's Box, so I don't know how it compares to that. I don't think Meteos is too "twitchy", it has a pretty nice slow build to it being too difficult. edit: I also saw a review of a game called Gunpey DS, and that looked pretty interesting. Sparkz
There is a new Disney version of Meteos coming out soon. I have Mr. Driller, which is an ok puzzle game. You can probably find a used copy for cheap. I've heard good things about Zoo Keeper (its like Bejeweled), but have not been able to find a copy for my wife. Also, Magnetica is supposed to be like Zuma, but I thought its a little too expensive at $30 as a present for my wife, because she has never really taken to Zuma. I'm still looking for a cheaper used copy. My wife absolutely loves Tetris, and she also likes Brain Age or Big Brain Academy. I would not recommend Break 'em All (its like Breakout), I did not enjoy this one at all.
Mark E
Yeah, the Brain Age or Brain Academy titles are pretty good and puzzley, not to mention cheap! If she likes the puzzle aspects of Phoenix Wright, I can heartily recommend Hotel Dusk, which I'm currently enjoying the hell out of it. Some very clever uses of the DS here. ChrisBardon
Yeah, Hotel Dusk is already on the radar if I could find a damn copy! Might just wait until it comes up on the rental queue. I'm a huge fan of Meteos though, but Emma found that it was a little tricky to get in there with the stylus and hit the right block (although it might be easier on the DS Lite and without being in a moving car ). She loves Lumines though-go figure.
Ryan FB
She would probably enjoy Polarium. Clubhouse Games might be another one to look at, though it's not strictly a "puzzle game". Mario vs. DK 2 has some puzzle elements, though they do require timing so I'm not sure whether she would enjoy it or not. Also, even though it's an import title, Picross DS is great and totally worth it.
Orpheus
I bought Gunpey a couple weeks ago but haven't had a chance to play it yet. It was clearanced out at Target at the time so YMMV in finding a copy.
Covak
Best puzzle game ever is Denki Blocks (GBA, but still one of the most-played games on my DS). It gets evil and mind-bending, but nice and gradually
merlot
She would probably enjoy Polarium. Another vote for Polarium.
Whooter
Also, even though it's an import title, Picross DS is great and totally worth it. Resurrected the thread to note that Picross DS was released in the U.S. last week. Just picked it up at Target today for $19.99. I'm addicted to nonograms so I'm really looking forward to diving into this...
Mark E
Wow, I posted here and never mentioned Planet Puzzle League? Shame on me. My all-time favorite puzzler, aka Tetris Attack in its earlier incarnations or Pokemon Puzzle League, it seems to now be under the Planet Puzzle League banner. At any rate, it is a game of excellence at any label. It is deceptively simple, but I guarantee that anybody who likes Tetris would enjoy this, if not love it. Wait, probably because this was for NON-twitch puzzle games. Oops, my bad, nothing to see here...
Carlucci
Pokemon Puzzle League ... Oops, my bad, nothing to see here... you had me at pokemon puzzle league. Planet Puzzle league....SOLD! Sending the Mrs. on a mission to find it right now. Carlos.
foogledricks
Shane on 1up says this is the best puzzle game of ALL TIME, easy, bar none, without a doubt, no contest.
Tom
It is quite awesome, and possibly the best gift Mark has ever given me. My question is, why we haven't played it online yet?
ChrisBardon
Picross is probably a buy, and possibly puzzle league. I really liked Tetris attack back in the day.
Carlucci
Got Planet Puzzle League last night. Terrific game. Using the stylus is much more natural and efficient for a game like this. I was able to put together some active-chains that would have escaped me on Pokemon Puzzle league. Drawbacks are no separate save files, and I don't like the navigation menus that much. Thanks Mark! I wouldn't have even known this existed if you hadn't posted here. Carlos.
ChrisBardon
When we were in NY last week, stopped by the Nintendo store and grabbed Picross, Puzzle League, and NY Times Crosswords. Picross is fantastic (although having no separate save files is really stupid), and I've only spent a little but of time with Puzzle league so far. Not bad, but I really need to go back and try some of the other modes. The crossword pack is great with a couple of annoying flaws that make it just a little less than it could have been. It's the only one of the three with multiple save slots though, so many bonus points for that. Why DS game designers assume that nobody shares their games is beyond me-I can see wanting to sell more copies, but if you're dealing with Siblings, this could just get nasty. Ryan FB
I haven't spent a whole lot of time with it, but NY Times Crosswords just feels unpolished to me. The UI looks like it was done in MS Paint or something, and when the whole game is crosswords, having crude font rendering is a considerable drawback. Whooter
FYI, Picross DS owners, I noticed today that 4 Classic Puzzle packs (from Mario's Picross) are available for download.
ChrisBardon
Yup, there were 2 up there a couple weeks ago, and 2 more after that. This game has to be one of the best value packs on the DS. Normal mode starts out with 4 levels, each with 15 puzzles, which I thought was a little light, but fair enough for 20 bucks. As I started playing though, it kept unlocking new blocks of 15 puzzles-I just got level 10. Add in the number that are likely to be in free mode and DLC and you really have a great package for 20 bucks.
Covak
If you finish every puzzle in levels 1 through 10, there are even more
