Magness
BestBuy has the Departed on HD-DVD on sale for $22.99 both online and in-store. GREAT deal as this is a combo DVD/HD-DVD disc. This is a sale price so I'm guessing it will be over Saturday but, it was not listed in the ad or anything that I could find. Also, in my local store the Departed on HD-DVD and several other titles (including a card for Black Dahlia on HD-DVD )were out at the "New Release" rack while the BD version was back on the "HD" aisle. At my local store, the HD-DVD's were down to 2 copies left when I found them but, the BD's were still well stocked* *This is not meant as a comment on the format war, it was far more likely due to the number of copies ordered of each format or simply shelf placement)
Eldorado
They've now raised the price to $34.99(online) and put it on backorder. Since no store around here had it in stock, their price, after tax and shipping, wouldn't have been much better for me than Amazon. Think I'll go place my order there now. reeldeal
wow, it's only 32.99 in-store in Canada that places pricing confuses me
JTello
BestBuy has the Departed on HD-DVD on sale for $22.99 Wow, man am I out of touch with the high def DVD's! I have to say, I very rarely buy dvd's at all, and when I do I'm very conscious of getting a good price on them. With that said I'm used to a good DVD price being say $14.99 or $!3.99 or less. Seeing that $22.99 for The Departed on HD-DVD is a good price really caught me off guard me. Really it shouldn't have. I should have expected higher prices for the new HD formats, but that just goes to show how much I've been sleeping on the high def DVD roll outs. A quick check of "normal" HD-DVD pricing on Bestbuy.com was like a kick to the face. I'll definitely be letting the HD format wars play out before I dive in, I just can't support my gaming habit and that type of pricing for what amounts to a very casual hobby in my case. Of course from a geeky/tech aspect I'm still jealous of you guys.
Lutter
I can get most releases for ~$17-$18 shipped from Amazon with their 10% off dealy they had going on last year. Otherwise the reason The Departed is so much is that it's a DVD/HD-DVD Combo disc (which, at $22.99 is almost half off the $40 MSRP). Blu Ray is worse... FOX/MGM loves charging $40 MSRP for barebones discs
Magness
Yea, an HD-DVD movie is typically $19 anywhere and as cheap as $15 on sale whether online or at B&M stores but, combo's (HD-DVD and Standard DVD on 1 disc) are almost always $10 more minimum... So The Departed at $22 in-store for a combo was a steal
JTello
A quick search on BB.com showed what looked like an average price around $30, including such odd older titles as Bullitt. I'm sure they can be had cheaper, but a starting price around $30 was where the sticker shock came from.

I just bought the 360 HD-DVD drive, but most movies are going to have to drop to $15 or so for me to bite. I'm not into the world where $23 for a movie is a deal

Quit shopping at bb.com then If you are buying into a premium format, you should expect to pay premium prices. simple economics.
