Civilization Revolution (360 and PS3)

I meant to post this after I first read it but forgot. GameSpot had a news story up about a recent Take Two earning report. Apparently, buried in there was some reference that a new Civilization game is in the works. They did not confirm if it was truly Civ 5 or some sort of spin-off, and GameSpot said there are only rumors of the game making it to consoles and portables. Still, the prospect of playing a Civ game on the 360 has me pretty excited. Has anyone heard anything about this from any other sources?

If they developed it for the PS3, do you really think they would implement two totally different interfaces like that? Has that ever been done?

I suspect the PC version would still be designed for mouse/keyboard. Why not make the PS3 version a port of the PC instead of the 360 version?

HELL no. Civ is exactly the kind of game that takes a mouse and keyboard.

I had no interest in BFME2 for the 360 either. I'd much rather play it on my PC. Some games really need a mouse.

I can see MAYBE Civ on the Wii. I can imagine the horrors of wrist pain after 10 hours of Civilization, though. Not good. Civ is too addictive.

Civ would be a good match for the DS. The touch screen would work great with a civ game.

No doubt the Civ series is much more playable on a keyboard-mouse set up. I'd probably be very tempted to get the PC version if it did come out on multiple platforms. For some reason, I didn't even feel compelled to try the Lord of the Rings game on the 360 but since I have a lot of history with the Civ series, I would be tempted to check it out. Now, I would be disappointed if it was some spin-off game instead of the true Civ 5.

Did you play it on the 360? I thought they did an admirable job bringing RTS controls to the 360 pad. Granted, BFME2 is a seriously dumbed down RTS and it would take a lot of work to get something as deep as a Civ game working right on a console.

Sort of along the same topic I've wondered how Spore will control. Will it be borderline "too complex for consoles" or will it have a Sims style overly simply input system? I prefer the complex style to the "designed for people who have never played a game before" technique employed in The Sims games.

I didn't, but considering the crazy frantic pace I'm used to playing BFME at (I was in a clan for about a year at gamereplays.org) I don't think I would be willing to transition to a gamepad for it.

I think a game like Spore might work. My wife's experince with the console version of The Sims wasn't that great - she beat most of it and then went back to the PC version.

Screenshots of this looked pretty cool in EGM. Eliminating settler improvements will minimize the micromanagement - probably critical in getting this running better on a controller. City management can be done just fine with a menu-driven interface.

This is looking better and better. Still, I clock hours and hours of Civ4 as it is on the PC :D

It's looking a lot more interesting than I expected. I figured I'd continue to favor the PC version, but I like the sound and look of the 360 version. At least, in the screenshots I like the look of those smaller, more dense maps. Combined with the other simplifications, it seems like a take on Civ I might enjoy more.

Civ Rev got bumped to a July 8 release. Not sure if Ninja Gaiden had anything to do with that, but they are saying that the later release will allow them to set up some release tournaments and special items for various stores where you purchase the game. Some more impressions recently came out from people who have played the game and it all sounded quite positive.

We're getting a demo on PSN & XBLA this week.

As for the demo's contents, players will be able to assume either Caesar's laurel wreath as the head of Rome or Cleopatra's crook and flail as Egypt's pharaoh. Players can either play against the game's computer-controlled opponents up to 1250 AD or head online to battle it out with human opponents over the same time period. The demo also comes packed with a tutorial for those unfamiliar with Civilization's turn-based gameplay.

All said, the demo will occupy about 1.08GB of hard disc space.

As a Civ4 fan I didn't find the demo very exciting. It seems like a pefectly nice, lite version of Civ4 with a really streamlined interface that works well enough on a console. But it's also so much like Civ4 that I just want to zoom out, have mouse control, and have all the missing complexity back. I hoped it would be a little more different, maybe a fun alternative to the PC game, but instead it just felt like a stripped down version with a clunky interface. It may be great for Civ noobs, but if any Civ4 fan bothers with it I'd love to hear why.

EDIT: If the DS game is similar I'll gladly pick that up to play on the go.

I'm a Civ fan from the very beginning. Civ4 is a great PC game. CivRev may be using Civ4 as a foundation but given that it is a console game I don't expect as much depth. Still, I felt the demo showed a fair amount. The essence of the Civ experience was there, and for me that is all I need. I can't explain why too well, but since I don't get much gaming time I tend to use the 360 more than my PC. Because of that, and because a game of CivRev won't keep me up until the wee hours for a few days, I'll be getting CivRev and enjoying it.

NEVER played this before. So it was bit confusing for me. Difficult for me to grasp what the hell was going on. With each turn as things became more apparent it became more fun. I'm guessing you cannot save in this game? You play one session from start to finish and either win or lose there is no gray area? Is that true? Because I played for a while and was sad that I had to stop and couldn't save. Sadly, I don't know if I have the time to play through an entire game in one sitting which seems to be what you do?
