Bizarre Creations new shooter - The Club

New score based shooter by the guys behind Geometry Wars? I'm interested.

Making an exclusive behind closed doors appearance at E3 2006 was the next project from award-winning UK based development studio Bizarre Creations. The super talented studio behind the definitive next-gen racing game Project Gotham Racing 3 are once again in partnership with SEGA having already enjoyed past success with the beloved Metropolis Street Racer. However this time we're replacing the cars with guns!

With this title Bizarre has created a unique take on the shooting genre, redefining and refreshing the mechanics of the 3rd person action shooter, as they have done in the racing genre with MSR and the PGR series.

This will be yet another showcase for the capabilities of the next-gen platforms, maximising the graphical, audio and multiplayer opportunities of next-gen hardware to give a gameplay experience unlike any other in the genre.

The game focuses on addictive and rewarding gameplay that tests your skills to the limit and leaves you, and the rest of the world, in no doubt about how good you really are.

A unique style, tone and storyline that drips with energy, attitude and anarchy and that demands you play again and again.

A variety of unusual, evocative locations dotted across the globe. You'll be wielding high powered weaponry in places you never imagined.

This will be the next next-gen title from Bizarre Creations - the creators of the original Formula 1, Metropolis Street Racer, and Project Gotham series. A studio who are justifiably regarded as a benchmark in next gen development, and have just won MCV's prestigious UK Development Team award.

It would be really cool if in these early screenshots they had these really detailed protagonists (as shown above), but had placeholder Geometry Wars Antagonists. So your shooting triangles and shit. And then they realized from a marketing standpoint they should just call it Geometry Wars 2. Man, if I ran the videogame industry.

Some PR writer somewhere really needs to be fired.

I played the demo last night and I really enjoyed it. It's really a rather different style of shooter. If you go in expecting a third person level based shooter ala Gears or something of the like you'll walk away completely suprised by the structure of the game. The Club would actually work really well as a stand alone arcade game to be honest.

As far as the gameplay, you simply choose your character and are then presented with a set of challenges that ask you to attain certain score for a level or to to get to the exit with the highest score possible in a given time limit. You're awarded points by the difficulty of the enemy you kill, where your shot lands and by shooting specific targets that grant combo bonuses etc. The longer the combo, the higher the score. You get bonuses for killing in stylish ways as well (i.e. killing several enemies while coming out of a roll). In the end its all really quite fun and I can see why Bizzare calls it the third person equivalent of Geometry Wars.

I really enjoyed the demo too. It's PGR as a shooter, which is really odd. Play it as a normal first person shooter (all be it 3rd person) & it's nowhere near as enjoyable as playing it as a score driven time based racer where you just happen to shoot people instead of skidding around corners :)

I picked this up on by trading in four xbox 360 games. (have a deal up here right now). I went in for Dynasty Warriors 6 and walked out with this game.

It's amazing. The graphics are cool. I like the modes. Kind of like a new twist on the running man movie. Looking forward to trying it out with some of my 360 lcvg buddies! ;)
