Looks rather swish.

UK retailer GAME have apparently already added the black peripherals (charging kit…etc) to their pre-order lists this week so it certainly seems as if it is all systems go. Curious to know what the UK price is, though I won’t get one soon enough to get it in black (can't say I am too fussed about that).

Engadget now says they are fake...

Update: Our trusted source that confirmed the Elite let us know that these shots are quite fishy; they don't have the same plastics details as the real Elite, nor does the retail box match up. Sorry folks, chalk this one up to the usual group of bored, fanatical photoshoppers.

It looks nice in black against a crisp white background, but I think it would look remarkably bland on a shelf personally.

I agree. How long ago was it that everyone was complaining that the consoles were all that flat black color? And now we are getting the same color as a "limited edition", I find that pretty amusing. And yes, the glossy black of the PS3 is an entirely different animal.

The system could be pink and I wouldn't care

More Elite talk...

The new box will go on sale in limited quantities soon for $479. The details may not be precise here, but I believe it will have an HDMI connector so that you can connect at the highest speed to a high-definition TV. It will come with a 120-gigabyte hard disk drive and will have IPTV capability.

Supposedly all 360's will support IPTV so I'm not sure if anything new will be included with the Elite SKU.

The Xbox 360 Elite will apparently not come with a built-in HD-DVD drive, which will remain an option for playing high-definition movie disks. In the spring, the new machine will be available in limited quantities and it will reflect a redesigned motherboard. Tina Conley, an outside spokeswoman for Microsoft, declined to comment on Saturday. How solid is this information? Some details may be wrong. I?m not looking at any press release right now that describes it all. The details will be announced soon enough.

I?ve been waiting for Microsoft to make a move like this. The company has scheduled a motherboard redesign and cost reduction for every year, but this is the first major change to take the costs out of the inside of the Xbox 360. By the fall, the company will also implement a chip redesign, shifting from 90-nanometer production to 65 nanometer production. That will bring costs down fairly dramatically and will enable Microsoft to make the box in larger quantities by the fourth quarter.

I'm not surprised those shots are fake; they certainly look it. Despite the fact that many, many people have genuine black machines ever since launch day, because that's what the ones for journos that play unsigned code look like, virtually every pic I've seen as a putative "new black 360" looks like a standard promo shot of a white one run through an inversion filter - the bits that should be darker in shadow are lighter, e.g. around thumbsticks.

For the record, I prefer the white, just as I do with my iPod and PSP.
