Currently I have a Toshiba 34? Direct View CRT (Tube TV). It is HDTV, but I am looking for something a bit larger. This will be used for my Daily HDTV, and recorded movies (maybe 20%) and Gamming (Xbox360 70%), some Movies (HD-DVD 10%), for the most part I will go into the theater room for movies. The TV room has a lot of windows so we do have a lot of reflections. Most viewing will NOT be at night (Theater Room for that), but early evening and day time. Viewing distance from the TV will be about 5-8 feet away. I do not know a lot about the differences between the Samsung Plasmas Model 5033 vs 5053. I was big on the 1080P, but after doing a lot of reading, I have heard that a good Plasma will give a great picture so that got me thinking about going that route. I live in an area where I can not go and see any of the TV?s to compare. I can only head over to Sams and see the Demo of the 50" Samsung Plasma HDTV Model: HPS5033. So I am looking for some Ideas. I am leaning towards maybe just waiting until the 1080P DLP drops in price more, but both of the Plasmas, Refurbished and the new Sams one (Lower model Number) look very very tempting - Scott
exile
Based on those, Panasonic w/o question. Just make sure you be careful with a Plasma when you game on it. Break it in carefully then start gaming.
shine5555
Thanks, I downloaded a burn in disc from AVS and if I go the Plasma Route, I will use that. I heard great things about the PQ on the Panasonic, but, I am hung up on the case, I just am not sure I can get over that silver case
Angry the Clown
Is the Samsung DLP not the one Romier has? If so it's better featured than the Panasonic plasma.
shine5555
Is the Samsung DLP not the one Romier has? If so it's better featured than the Panasonic plasma. Yes it is the same. I think I have just read toooooo much. I was all ready to get the Samsung DLP, then started reading about Plasma's having a better picture, and now the prices are coming down on the Plasmas but not the DLP (Yet)
shine5555
OK so, I went to Sams today and, I came home with nothing. From doing some more research, I have found the difference between the 50” Samsung Plasmas Modle 5033 vs 5053 is a filter of sorts that will cut down on the reflections from the glass screen. AT Sams I could see a lot of reflections on the Samsung 5033. I still do not have any way to see any of the other TV’s . The room that this TV is going to be in has a lot of nice big glass doors and windows. I am leaning more towards the Samsung DLP… I am thinking that the reflections might be less. I am still unsure about the whole Plasmas vs DLP. I think, the Plasmas will have a better picture, and I do like a nice bright, pop off the screen picture. One other set that is mentioned a lot is the Sharp AQUOS series. IT is a LCD but a lot of people seem to like it. I have not heard many good things about the LCD’s but this AQUOS series seems to get a lot nice reviews. Still open for ideas. Thanks for the feedback so far - Scott
exile
The new Aquos's sets are quite nice. I'm buying a new Panasonic 9UK 50". I'm not a big fan of the Samsung plasma sets due to the buzzing issues they are having.

Angry the Clown
Anyone have any idea what's planned for the 10UK? The 768p 10s should be much the same as last year's, but I would imagine they will also introduce a commercial equivalent of the forthcoming 50" 1080p VIERA to the range. Not so sure they'll do a commercial equivalent of the 42inch 1080p VIERA, but we'll have to wait and see. Either way we probably won't hear any news until July for an Oct/Nov release. shine5555
OK so... I think I have ruled out the Plasma's. Just too much reflection in my room. Now it appears I am down to the following Samsung LN-S4095D 40" 1080p LCD HDTV – 1629.88 Delivered, Amazon.com Sharp Aquos LC42D62U 42" 1080p LCD HDTV – 1769.99 Delivered, Amazon.com Samsung HL-S5087W 50" 1080p DLP HDTV - 1,549.77 Delivered, Amazon.com
King of All Cosmos
The problems with reflections on plasmas are wildly exaggerated. The Panasonic handles reflections about the same as CRT screens, so unless you do critical viewing with a bright light source behind you or right next to your sitting position, you'll be fine. Don't settle for any of those inferior DLPs or LCPs, the Panny plasma picture is indeed superior by a good margin. I have 3 large windows to the side of my Pioneer plasma and don't have any glare or reflections whatsoever.
shine5555
Thanks, I do like the Plasmas but one of the reasons my wife said we could get a new TV for that room is... Our Toshiba 34" Tube TV with the Glass Front has very bad reflections. It is unwatchable in the mornings and evenings. Living in the middle of nowhere, I would hate to drive 2 hours to get a Plasma find it reflects the same as our tube TV, drive back 2hours and get something different I have read some good things on the 2 LCD's I listed above. I hate living in the middle of no where. I need to make a field trip to look at some of these
King of All Cosmos
Think about repositioning the furniture if possible, or get blinds or drapes that will reduce incoming light if that's a problem. Easy, reasonable measures can be taken to deal with such things without having to settle for inferior televisions. And if the reflections are really that bad, then they'd probably be seen even on an LCD anyway. The acoustics and light of a room can be controlled, never settle for inferior AV equipment as an easy or lazy way of dealing with the greater problem. GreenMonkey
If the light is really an issue, go with the DLP. I can't stand the black level detail lost on an LCD For HT use. Sure I've got one, but it spends most of its daylight hours playing Sesame Street or Rachel Ray or Oprah (or maybe some Dead Rising in the afternoon on the weekend for me). At night the DLP projector goes on for any serious gaming/HT. I know there's some LCD fans out there, but I consider them the worst of all technologies by a long shot due to the inevitable black crush. I only consider them acceptable in a bright sunlight situation (like folks that have highly windowed rooms or skylights). Don't go with an LCD for HT unless you really don't mind losing a bunch of detail in dark movies.
shine5555
Thanks... Still looking at all my options. Lucky for me... the theater room is where we do our critical viewing of movies. This is more along the lines of the Kids/Game/ some TV or Movies room. Blinds and drapes would be tough to pull off in this room. 7 Glass doors. We live in/own a Bed and Breakfast. This was a sun room, but we took it over for our “everything” room. The DLP was my First choice, and I keep coming back to that one. Price seems to be right. I have my Brother going to look at a bunch of my options today during lunch (He lives in NY). I hope to hear from him, but he LOVES Sony, so I can only imagine what his results will be. You will notice I did not have Sony on the list but I am sure I will hear about how good they are compared to the others. I have nothing agents Sony but “I” have a hard time with the cost of Sony TV’s compared to the other options, and I like the Xbox 360 through VGA option
GreenMonkey
Well, for a sun room, and a secondary TV...I can see considering an LCD. I use one for the daytime. That's the kind of situation that warrants one. The DLP is of course a better option if you have the room for it.
exile
LCD sounds like your best option then. DLP's aren't really that bright to begin with unless you go with a DLP with a brighter bulb like the 180's the Mits DLP's have. I'd also recommend you look at Visual Apex.com Their service is amazing and they really treat you right. Amazon can be really spotty especially with larger electronics. shine5555
OK thanks for all the feedback... I went to CC this weekend. A 3 hour round trip and looked at a ton of options. I just ordered the Samsung HL-S5687W. Final jumped on the great prices. I was just about to pull the trigger on the 50”, I then did a quick search on onecall.com and found the 56” to be the same price. How could I not get the bigger one . I have yet to see anything in the specs for the new models that I thought I need so, I jumped. It feels good to be done with the search. Onecall.com had everything shipped for under 1600.00. I just could not pass up on that deal Now the hunt for a nice stand.....
