Lutter
Just got my first "real" job since I finished my BS degree in Hospitality Mangement down here in Orlando, FL working for a big hotel management company that is spread out nationwide (although the largest concentration is in the south). My first assignment: Director of Housekeeping for a hotel in Downtown San Antonio, Texas. So I'm packing up my things and heading up and over to Texas! Just wondering if there were any Texans on the board who live in the area. I know the area well, as my girlfriend/fiance` has been studying in Austin, TX for the past year and she's actually originally from Corpus Christi, TX. dogbert
Congrats on the job! No idea who is down in San Antonio, but we've got a bunch of Texans on the forum. We lived in Dallas for ~5 years, it's where all my wife's family is.
Carlucci
Congratulations! I'm a born-and-raised Houstonian. San Antonio is a fun town. We take vacation weekends there nearly every year. There was a thread on what to see/do in S.A. not too long ago. Carlos.

Union Carbine
Congrats. I just moved out of Texas but San Antone is nice, close to Austin which is really nice.
cane corso
I'm in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I do have some friends down in San Antonio. Nice place. Congrats and good luck.
Rainmaykr
Austinite here. The only advice I can give you is watch out for anyone from College Station. They're the path to the dark side. Kidding, of course. Welcome to The State. San Antonio is a great town (and that it's only 45 minutes from Austin is a bonus). We should plan some kind of Texas LCVG get-together, since so many are from the Central Texas area. Can't let the New Yorkers have all the fun. I'm just pissed that there's no Fry's Electronics in San Antonio... the one in Austin, TX is kind of like my Nerd Shan-gra-la every time I visit the area. A gathering definitely sounds like a great idea. My assignment begins on June 5th so, hopefully by then, I'll be all set up with an apartment and such. I'm thinking either 6th Street in Austin or the Riverwalk in San Antonio? That or we can go shoot something!

Camp
I'm in Dallas too. Love San Antonio though. I'd love Austin too if the traffic on 35 wasn't so damn horrible. Congratulations on the job. Sounds like it's a nice fit for your finance too.
foogledricks
Ha! The Texans have been outed! Do you know it is illegal to sell dildos in Texas? Always found that ... interesting. I have family in Texas (visited once). And an ex-girlfriend (stay away from her). The thing that got me about Texans is that they are willing to travel great distances on a whim, versus me, who thinks a half-hour is my limit for visiting family and friends. Also, they seem so damn nice. Made me feel like a Masshole while I was there. "These people are so much more polite than me. What's wrong with me?" Carlucci
Actually, I think it's just "realistic" ones that can't be sold here. Which means you would be out of luck if you ever tried to bring your AngryVeinMaster 4000 into Texas. Carlos.
dogbert
Nope, they're illegal to sell as sexual aids. It's legal to sell them as 'novelty' items. A friend's sister made a lot of money doing those sextoy parties, she got out because the 'market' was saturated & a woman in a nearby town was busted for running such a party when an undercover female cop was there & she mentioned the magic words 'sex toy' (more or less). The joys of Texas.

PewterPirate
I was once told that only two things come from Texas, steers and........I can't quite remember what the other thing was. I don't think it was a-holes, they usually come from New York.
Scar
Checking in from Dallas here...I went to school at UT so I lived in Austin for 4 years. My first "real" job was in San Antonio and I lived there for 4 years before moving to Dallas (wife's family lives here). San Antonio is a big city run like a small town. The traffic will make you crazy as people drive like they have nowhere to go and they are in no particular hurry to get there.

Scar
Well, looky who came out of the woodwork to represent. Hey James! Shout out to my simple chat brothers! How is the motherland (Austin) holding up?
Lutter
Alright, who changed the topic to dildos? Might have to pick a few things up for the missus on the way out of town :o San Antonio is a big city run like a small town. The traffic will make you crazy as people drive like they have nowhere to go and they are in no particular hurry to get there. NOTHING can compare to the traffic here in Orlando, so I'm not scared in the least bit, although I will have to be commuting downtown (running the rooms division in a hotel right near HemisFair Park. I heard that North San Antonio was the nicer part of town to live in and I'm actually flying up there with my lady 2 weeks from today to find a place. Any truth in that? Rainmaykr
You know all the dudes from Houston think ya'll are sissies for complaining about San Antonio and Orlando traffic.
Scar
Rob, yes, the north part of town is definitely "nicer" but the traffic is absolutely crazy. They are improving the roads but San Antonio is a classic case of the infrastructure not keeping up with the growth. What are you looking for? An older, established neighborhood? If so, I would recommend the Alamo Heights area. This is the "old money" part of town. Some of the major roads in the area include Broadway. Let me know what you are looking for and I'll try to help you out. Our best friends live in San Antonio so we actually make the trip quite regularly. Lutter
I'm looking for an apartment... anywhere from $800 to $1300 dollars per month. Got quite a few leads in the area (including the Alamo Heights area) and I'm actually flying up there the week after next to look at a bunch of places. From what I've heard that'll get me a nice 2bd/2ba around 1000 to 1200 sq ft in the area which is exactly what I'm looking for. Can't buy a place because my assignments for this company are going to have me moving locations every 12 months or so (luckily I'm unmarried [although I will have my girlfriend in tote] and have no kids, so that's not a big deal). My next area will probably be in Austin as my we have a GIANT hotel opening there come the end of 2008/09 that I've expressed interest working on (an 1100 room hotel right on Congress Ave, 2 blocks from the famous bats that should have broken ground as we speak). On a side note: Let me also say that when both your girlfriend and mother are in-control director-types and are working together on something (like picking out furniture/paint/bedding) just step back. I have. I just want a 2nd bedroom to set up my HT in and a bed to sleep on.
dogbert
I'm looking for an apartment... anywhere from $800 to $1300 dollars per month. Sigh. I'd forgotten what apartment rents were like back in TX.
