Romier S
Now that Oblivion has been released on the Playstation 3 and Shivering Isles is in general rotation, Bethesda can finally kick Fallout 3 into high gear and it appears they are doing just that. The Fallout website has been updated with a new concept art image, new music (excellent!), and a countdown for the teaser trailer in 34 days. Check it out: http://fallout.bethsoft.com/ God, please be turn based. Please be Fallout! Bethesda knows how to make an open world game but I need perks, I need turn based action and on the music front I need some oldies along with the epic score:). I WANT IT and I would absolutely faint if they got it all right.:rock
foogledricks
Do you also want a sequel to "Adventure" to have a knight carrying an arrow around rather than a sword?
Romier S
Do you want me to just ban you outright or give you forewarning? It can go either way with it really. In all seriousness, have you played Fallout or Fallout 2 Keith? If not then you've litte understanding of what I mean when I say I'd like to see certain things return to the series. It's those very things that made Fallout the game so many older CRPG fans loved and still love today (along with how absolutely open ended every aspect of the game was). I have faith Bethesda knows what the fans of the series want but then deep inside I also have fears the we'll see a bit too much of an Oblivion feel to a series that should play nothing like it. foogledricks
A while back I listened to an interview with Beth about Fallout 3. And they said that their biggest challenge would be staying faithful to the series, without being strangled by it in a way that would prevent them from making the best game they can possibly make. They acknowledged that it is impossible to satisfy everyone's expectations of that balance, as people will complain, no matter how good the game is. So your comments immediately dug up that interview in my head. Your concerns are exactly what they were talking about. And my commentary on that is simply to keep an open mind about things. People won't even play Metroid Prime because it's a first-person game. Or Wind Waker because its cartoony. I've seen how people's expectations for a franchise can taint their experience. It is an understandable but unfortunate thing when that happens. So I am not trivializing your concerns so much as I am smiling at the first of many fan concerns that Beth talked about in their interview a year ago. I have no informed opinion on the specifics of the features or gameplay approaches you mention, because as you correctly assume, I have NOT played this game series. Though I am very interested in it. PS If you ban me I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.
General Zot
Dogmeat. I want Dogmeat in the game - all else pales by comparison.

And my commentary on that is simply to keep an open mind about things. Well of course I'm keeping an open mind about things. I wouldn't have bothered to actually post any info whatsoever about the game or note my excitement for its arrival if I my intention was to write it off outright. It's a website with concept art. I need a little more than to work with. Other than that, you're damn right I have expectations of this series and you're damn right they are going to define how well I personally feel Bethesda is handling the Fallout franchise. Dont worry, I'm not so much trivializing your advice as I am smiling about how easy it is for someone who has never touched a Fallout game to say "keep an open mind and don't let your expectations taint it". I'm glad you're walking into this with a fresh perspective and experiencing the world of Fallout for the first time but those of us that have played the original Fallout and its sequel and hold both those games in very high regard DO have expectations of what constitutes a GOOD Fallout sequel and what doesn't. General Zot
Hell, I'm still a little pissed Fallout ditched the team dynamic of Wasteland from the C64 (Brian Fargo's admitted spiritual successor.) That being said, I still played the living hell out of Fallout 1 and 2. I'll be a little cautious if it is 1st person dungeon crawler like Obilivion, but I can guarantee you I'm buying it launch day no questions asked. Bethseda has enough cred with me that whatever the heck they produce, I assume it will be RPG buttery smoothness.

foogledricks
Will making it turn-based immediately make it sell less to the mainstream who prefer real time, or will making it real time make it sell less because the hardcore fans demand it? I was thinking about this having just heard and interview about some game that was turn-based and was viewed as a risk for being so. Can't remember the name, I think it was on the Game Theory podcast. Not sure if it relates to this discussion.
dogbert
My uneducated guess: the market for realtime is bigger than the hardcore audience that wants it turnbased. On top of that, bear in mind the hardcore FallOut fans are the amongst the most conservative hardcore of the hardcore compared to most hardcore gaming communities. Cyberwoo
Ya I don't think there is much of a mass market for turn based games these days unfortunately. Although everyone seems to love Worms...
Romier S
My uneducated guess: the market for realtime is bigger than the hardcore audience that wants it turnbased. Yep, and it's ashame too. In the case of strategy games or something like Fallout I've always much preferred turn based over real time. I love the old Bioware D&D games for instance even though they were a real time/turn based hybrid (much like KOTOR). However, I do so love a game like Temple of Elemental Evil even moreso (at least combat wise) thanks to its turn based nature.
Kyle-K
Turn based games are great!... I think my twitch reflexes have faded enough that the RTS are too much for me nowadays Other than Advance Wars (which I still play a ton)... I haven't played a good turn based game in ages... Fallout was great, but my favorite used to be the Jagged Alliance games! Someone should make another on of them too...
General Zot
I think this is the old case of "turn based games are dead, dead, dead" right up until they are not That is to say until a turn based game is released that is cool enough and fun enough to sell a million or so copies. Then suddenly it will be all the rage again. Games are just like Hollywood, just slower. The mid-summer comedy was dead and buried until Wedding Crashers slew the box office - they've been everywhere since. Or superheroes were considered sh^& movies (thanks Batman Returns) right up until Spiderman cracked the box office like a nut. Now you can't count all the superhero movies in the queue. If Fallout 3 is turn based, and excellent, and SELLS, the whole conversation will be moot.
foogledricks
If Fallout 3 is turn based, and excellent, and SELLS, the whole conversation will be moot. Not that I don't agree, but that is certainly a broad list of challenging IFs to hang your hat on as a way of labeling the points of this discussion moot. General Zot
Sure, just saying that money talks and everything else walks. Personally, I do think we are going to get some variation of Postapocalyptic Oblivion with Fallout 3, not sure I care. If the mutants are oozy/green and the giagantic scorpians make a nice crunch when they die, I'll play it.

I always hear the name of Fallout tossed around in the company of Baldur's Gate II. Never got around to playing it, though. Baldur's Gate II is the best RPG ever created! Its quasi-turned based nature was close enough to turn-based for me. Underneath it was really round-based D&D - definitely qualified as a turn-based game. Romier S
Filefront link is active and working. Downloading now: http://files.filefront.com/Fallout3+TeaserTrailer/;7699970;/fileinfo.html EDIT: Finally downloaded! It's called a teaser for a reason. There is very little to comment on really and there doesn't appear to be any in-game footage but goodness they got the atmosphere so right and the soldier appearing at the end pretty much put me in fanboy overdrive:).
